Red Light Therapy for Equine Virus |
| |
|
The Lazer Red Light Therapy is often helpful in killing virus and boosting immune systems. Used for 20 minutes on the jugular vein and on a few other acupuncture points on the body, it's very affective as a preventative and when used with conventional medical treatment.

2 sides to every story..... |
| |
|
Not that I need to defend myself.... my track record speaks for itself... but as lynhad says... there's
two sides to every story.... what my "dissatisfied customer" is failing to mention, is that she
wanted me there at EXACTLY 3:00... with absolutely no room for flexibility.... I offered to come
later... she said NO....or early in the morning and she said NO... I offered her a braider to meet the
trailer at the horse show in the morning.... she said NO... not to mention getting quite snippy and
rude... I had been braiding all night and had just finished local day at the hampton classic at 2pm
and wasn't going to make it there by three and thought it was the right thing to do to call and say
that I couldn't be there by 3:00... She proceeded to "tell" me "you will be here by 3:00!" At that
point, I figured I'd offered her every possible option and she just was unwilling to work with me...
So, as I said earlier... there's 2 sides to every story.....

WELL THIS IS INTERESTING |

|
Since when does LIEquine allow posting of names when someone is dissatisfied with a professionals service? Everytime someone tries to mention a trainer, boarding facility, etc. it gets xxed out. I personally have always used that person as braider and never once did she cancel on me. Her braiding is exceptional. She even called me one night to let me know one of my horses was not acting right and has also filled their water buckets and given them extra hay which I really appreciated. There's always two sides to every story.

Due to circumstances beyond our control,my 2 boys and I have found ourselves staying long term in a home where pets are not allowed. We adopted a medium sized sheltie mix from Brookhaven shelter back in December. Her name is Hannah And she is around 13 or 14.Very sweet ,mellow dog.Still has a lot of spunk.Loves to do tricks and go for walks. She is up to date on all he shots and deworming. She does have pretty advanced dental disease, but if someone is willing to give her a good home I will work w/ my vet to get her teeth done at no cost. Please email me @ kris1885@optonline.net if you guys know anyone.I think she would be a great companion for an elderly person. She is great w/ kids, horses, cats, other dogs, etc. Please help us soon.I can only keep her where she is for 2 more weeks at best.thanx everyone.Kristine

Need Braider for 5 Horses |
| |
|
I'm looking for a braider to braid 5 horses on Sunday August 29th for Monday August 30th. Our horses are nice, easy, and relaxed and will already have their manes pulled. One pony, two small quarter horses, a medium size morgan and a draft mix.
Last year, a braider called me one hour before my horses were supposed to be braided and said she couldn't come because she was tired. I wound up having to braid my horses myself in addition to preparing 10 riders, two horse trailers, and the whole situation (years ago I braided horses professionally, but as a coach cannot do double duty).
I would not recommend that braider, because last minute she canceled on me and kind of told us tough luck. She was rude and unreliable.
Because I used to be a braider myself, I do expect exceptional work so please email me if you can do the braiding with photos of your braids. rhiannon.c.beauregard@gmail.com

Stitch needs his forever home |
| |
|
Stitch the staffie mix needs a forever home. I am currently fostering him. My time as his foster mom is coming to an end. I am going to post this here because I own horses and stitch is very good around all farm animals, including the chickens! He is actually more afraid of the chickens than anything else lol. If one goes after him he runs! Stitch was rescued from brooklyn ACC's euth list a year ago. He had severe demodex mange! Noone wanted him because of the way he looked, he had sores covering almost 60% of his body. Terri Yezzi, founder of Save A Tail rescue took him home and nursed him back to health over 6 painful months. He had to get painful baths everyday to help his skin heal along with his meds, and skin scrapings. None the less not once did Stitch even so much as lift his lip to protest. He was a very good boy and would wag his tail everytime. Then Stitch went to a really nice boarding facility where he had all day group play with lots of other dogs. Unfortunatly the place went under and the animals started to get neglected. When Terri pulled Stitch from the facility he was emaciated and his demodex had flared up again. Thats when he was brought to me. We have gotten Stitch's demodex completely healed(appaerntly last time we thought it was gone but it wasn't) It should never flair up again. Now after living with me and my animals (horses, chickens, cats and dogs) He is looking for his forever home! This dog is by far one of the sweetest animals I have ever met, and is very special. He will lye in your arms and cuddle for hours, or do a back flip to catch a frisbee. He LOVES to play with other dogs. He is great with children. I have TONS of photos and video of him, so feel free to contact me for more info! Feli1885cia@yahoo.com

I apologize to anyone who may have taken offense to my recent post about Animal Control of N.Y.C. "killing their animals" What I SHOULD have said was that they "Humanely Euthanize"..It is very sad that these shelters are so overburdened with so many unwanted animals they are forced to Euthanize about 50 animals a day.
I've heard people say "You never know what your getting from these places.." There are SO many Adoptables at ACC, They are evaluated for aggression and behavior, I adopted the SWEETEST little girl ever, a total "lovebucket" she never leaves our side and goes into her crate on her own to take naps. I told Wendy I wanted a "laid-back" pup and that is exactly what we got..Thanks Wendy!

Thumbs up for adoption a dog from Wendy! |
| |
|
We adopted out Linnie (Lynette) through Wendy as well. Wendy helped us by having us look through listings and speaking to the rescue on site about potential dogs for us. When we decided on Lynette she was shipped to Wendy who fostered her for a month for us, nursing her through a respiratory illness, recovering from malnutrition and being spayed. My husband picked her up all UTD on everything, spayed, with Microchip implanted. She's a handful of a dog, but we picked her out for that reason. She is a beautiful 2 year old Plott Hound/Pit mix. Nothing but nice things to say about Wendy and the shape our dog was in when we got her...she can certainly help you find the right pooch in need of a home.

Adoption Fees Continued |
| |
|
As a rescue I just wanted to put in my two cents. Each person is going to run their rescue differently. We are individuals and have different ideas, opinions, etc. I personally try not to and have never set an adoption fee over $1000.00. The horses I have saved definately cost more than that to rehabilitate but Im not looking to make money. Just looking to use it toward the next horse that comes in, thats why its not for profit. I know for a fact that there are people out there that can afford the monthly but cant afford the upfront lay out of $1000-$1500.00 And i will not turn them away. We try and match up horse and rider as best as we can as do the other rescues. I am willing to work with anyone that has references nad can offer a good home :) Some rescues have more overhead than some and some get discounts where maybe some dont. There are alot of factors here to consider. I think given the crappy economy everyone is doing the best they can. So lets try and stick togther and remember that we are all aiming for the same goal...to save these horses :)

rescue price |
| |
|
Hey, I got a nice rescue horse for $100. Wouldn't trade him for a horse worth $10,000 (really happened too I was offered a show jumper from my brother's brother-in-law) but in order to take her I'd have to give up AJ and that's a NO!
I can't understand the quarrel over an adoption price, it's a life you've saved. AJ is crippled, bad knee. I can't ride him, but he costs the same to keep as any other horse and he gives me what I need..Unconditional LOVE, Brit tried to talk me OUT of adopting him but I wouldn't listen to her. To me he's perfect and I don't care what it costs. He's alive.
Now on another topic, I'm looking for an adoptable pup no older then ten months, sex doesn't matter it will be neutered. Medium sized with fluffy coat ( border..aussie..golden..) MUTT is perfect. My brother has a pup (fixed, perfect health) in need of a friend. The dog will be a king or queen and want for NOTHING. I wish my brother would adopt me!
Can anyone help me out here?

Adoption fees |
| |
|
Interesting discussion regarding adoption fees. It seems to me that once a rescue has saved a horse they now have the responsibility to find the animal the best home possible, not just any home. I notice that there are rescued horses who end up being swapped around or even back at Camelot. If putting a "value" on a horse up for adoption helps it find a more suitable home, for example one where an injury or sickness will not force the owner into tough financial decisions, it is a smart move, even if it means the horse has a longer wait to be adopted. A good heart and good intentions isn't enough. These fees are a drop in the bucket compared to the potential expenses, even if you think you have a great deal on board or feed. I believe a rescue has a right to feel comfortable that when they hand over an animal they have invested time, money and effort into, it really will be a "forever" home. If these fees seem unreasonable, even after knowing the money will go right back into the next rescue, it seems fair that a rescue may suspect it may not be the best placement. That being said, each individual adoption should be judged on its own merits, at the discretion of the rescue organization.
My son and I have recently started to volunteer at Project Sage. It is a pleasure to work with Brittany. She is committed whole-heartedly to each and every horse she takes in. These horses are treated like family, no matter how long or short their stay is and you can see it in their eyes. They know they are in a better place and they are happy. It is often difficult to say goodbye to these wonderful animals after all the love and effort put into them, and I know the foremost thought on Brittany's mind is to make sure they go to a home where they will never have to feel lost again. My son is going to start working with one of the OTTTBS that just arrived. When this horse is ready to be adopted, it should only go to a home completely prepared to provide all the love, care and support it may require. While the love may not cost anything, everything else does. The adoption fee is only the beginning, and if there is such focus placed on that cost alone, I would not feel comfortable that the horse was going to the right place. This is not meant to disparage anyone who feels they would be an awesome owner, but the focus is supposed to be on the horse after all.

Long Island horse at camelot |
| |
|
Unfortunately this isn't uncommon at all. Lesson barns are a business. When the horse can no longer do his job for whatever reason, they are often sent to auction. There is no profit in keeping horses that can't work. Many of the lesson horses come from auctions to start with. It's sad.

If I had learned and understood the process of rescues as much as I do now I probably would have leaned more toward an adoption from a rescue rather than purchase from a sales barn eventhough I really love my horse.

Food For Thought |
| |
|
I don't usually post on here but I must add to this topic... I just PURCHASED (not rescued) a horse after months and months of looking at rescue horses that were up for adoption and contemplating whether or not I'd want to take on a horse that MIGHT have a pre-existing condition (whether it be health-related or mental-abuse or neglect) either way, it sat uneasily with me for some reason. Turned out, my horse, after traveling so many hours on a trailer which he'd only done once or twice before in his life, left his home and arrived at my barn sick as a dog... During that time that he was on the trailer he worked himself up into such a frenzy that he contracted an extraordinarily high fever... At that point, so many things came up as possible issues that from what I understand many people don't check for when purchasing a horse. In most cases, even if you do purchase a horse and do the bloodwork, if you are using a shipper and the trailer is not 100% clean, whatever tests you had done as part of your vet exam no longer means a thing anyway! I was forced to have him checked for several different things and also vaccinate which ended up costing me just as much if not more than a rescue horse ON TOP of the purchase price and luckily he ended up with nothing but shipping fever which was then treated with antibiotics (more money spent). So my point here is, no matter what you do, these costs cannot be avoided. Buying from an honest rescue who has already covered these initial costs and spent some time with the horse is a great idea if you are concerned with the condition of the horse and cost and you can provide some patience and nurturing. If you get a sound horse that you continue to take care of and maintain then your biggest vet costs may be over. Most happy, healthy, and sound horses only need routine vet visits and live a long life.
No matter how you slice it, it's all the same - rescue, sales barn, etc. you still have to put in a minimum of around 800 bucks...

"NOT true what-so-ever. I can't afford to pay $1500 for a horse"
Then how will you pay the vet bills if you horse colics? If your horse gets a bad injury? $1500 is nothing for a nice horse. You are missing the point that the money goes BACK INTO THE RESCUE! Very simple to understand...I take the money and go to the sale and pull 3-4 horses out of the kill pen. If you would like to come out to our farm I can go over it with you further. It's a simple process but maybe you need clarification. Our open house is coming up, you should stop by and meet some of the amazing horse here at Project Sage.
I'd rather have adopters that can afford to take care of my horses and not have to cut corners.
On that note - moving off of this topic - Thank you to all of our amazing supporters!!!

Unwanted Camelot Save |
| |
|
While we are on the topic. I offer QT to people pulling horses for Camelot auction. I have a gorgeous black Tennessee Walker mare here that is QT'ing with me. Extremely sweet, good ground manners, nicely put together, just a real nice horse. The woman who purchased her was looking for a specific horse: Sound, smooth gaited, and quiet. Well she rode the mare at my farm a week after it arrived from the sale and the horse was pretty "up". Long story short she doesn't want the horse. Would anyone be willing to take on this lovely mare? She has ~ $1,000 into her that she wants back but I can promise you this mare is worth way more then that. She just needs someone who is willing to have her vetted, teeth floated, feet done, and ride her in a calm fasion AFTER she has settled in somewhere. If anyone can help please contact me - ponytaleadventure@msn.com because I will be horrified if this poor mare winds up back at Camelot. Please understand she is NOT a rescue of mine and I do not own her. Her QT is up on August 1st, and I will be making a trip to LI to deliver a horse that is QT'ing with her to a woman on LI that saved her (different woman), so could also trailer the Black mare to her new home for a modest fee.

It is wonderful that you have the ability to take a horse from an auction or from the track! But please lets point out the pros and cons of this:
A horse from the auction may not be what you think it is, you need to know what you are looking at and be willing to take a total loss if the horse is not what you wanted. After all, what are you going to do if you thoght you were getting a show quality horse and instead you got a permanently lame pasture puff? This is where adopting from a rescue assures you that the horse is what someone says it is and has already been thoroughly checked out. If it still doesn't work out, the rescue will take it back.
Now Fees:
Free horse- $125 to have it's teeth floated, $40 to have it's feet trimmed, $50 to power pack de-worm it, $15 for Tapeworm and Bots deworming, $50 for 2 series of vaccinations, $35 for a Coggins test, $150 for a routine lameness exam w/farm call, $300 for 30 days worth of QT as ANY new addition from an auction should have.
That comes to $765....that is the minimum that a rescue will have put into a new rescue. This is a routine entrance to the rescue work-up and protocol before being made available for adoption. Generally if there is anything questionable at all, we also run blood work, pull radiographs, ultrasounds, preg check ALL mares. So following this logic, in order to get your free horse everything that your rescue horse will have had, your free horse will come to a minimum of $765, a rescue horse that has been full evaluated ahead of time will carry an adoption fee of $800...that's not too far off is it?
Also I may add, MANY of us rescues would gladly consider a perfect home over the adoption fee. If someone contacted me and said hey look I have this set-up and would love to give a home to horse X but I just don't have the $1000 up front, we would look at the abiity of the adopter to support the horse and the quality of the home and if all looked good then we would certainly lower the fee in order for the horse to get a good home. On the flip side 1 injury to a horse can cost several hundred dollars or more, our adopters need to explain to us how they would handle this if they can't afford to lay out money for an adoption fee. We want what is best for the horses in our care, they are why we do this. So while it may not seem fair to some people everything is done to ensure that these horses never want for anything again and that is the bottom line.

Nikki, Yeah, I saw that horse. Really cute too. This is not the first time a horse has been run through Camelot from Long island and ended up in the killpen. Lucky for the barn that sent him, that their name was not mentioned. I can't imagine that would be very good for buisiness.

Hug your horses Indeed!!!
Dont be too hard on people who buy horses dogs or any other animals. Im a big animal rescue person but not everone wants to take a rescue just like not everyone wants to adopt a child or drive a used car or rent a condo. I have 8 dogs, 6 rescue dogs and 2 I purchased. I want to show (its something I have yet to do in animal world and I promised myself Id learn all I could and try everything I can) I have nothing against people who breed anything IF THEY do it right! Breed for the right reasons, breed quality animals, and take care of them appropriately. In anycase while some rescues have little or nothing wrong with them some rescues are head cases and have a laundry list of issues and some people just cannot handle that. How about we tell people adopt if you think youre cut out for it but LOVE AND CARE FOR whatever you own no matter how you obtain it! Like you said HUG THOSE HORSES, dogs, cats, bunnies, birds whatever you have HUG it and LOVE it please!!! All the rescue groups are filled with animals that people should have hugged and couldnt or wouldnt!

I forgot to add that in my previous message. Not for profit dosent mean what you think the horse is worth... you just pretty much contradicted your self.. If the horse is "worth" 1500 and beyond, thats great... BUT not for profit means you dont price that way... You price on what you've put into the horse as many have already mentioned. Rescues used to never charge more than $500 a horse and you know what, they actually got homes... Now people are asking $1000 + and the horses are sitting. There are rescues with FREE horses who havent been able to get them homes.. NICE horses..
Don't want to ramble again. Just IMO.

Adoption fees pt 2 |
| |
|
"If you can't afford to pay an adoption fee it usually means you can't afford to pay board, vet, farrier. Most people spend over $1000.00 a month on their horse just on basic care (board, vet, farrier, treats!) Every penny that is made from adoption fee's goes to help other horses. "
NOT true what-so-ever. I can't afford to pay $1500 for a horse.. And i never ever would.. No offence. I'd rather go to the auction myself or to belmont where my cousin works, and pick out a horse myself. I'd spent half that in rehabbing and re-training myself. Not every one has great "connections" OR experience to do that. Thankfully I do. I only spend $600 a month feeding my 3 horses. And thats ALL DAY hay, grain and beet pulp. Then there is my rough board, which is only $275 and stall fees , of THREE horses. (I do have emergency funds aside ofcourse) And people are asking 700-900 for ONE stall. It's crazy. UPkeep is differnt than upfront money for many people.I think its really unfair that a GREAT person would be overlooked because they did not have $1500 for a adotion fee but could provide a amazing, loving, CARING home.
I know tons of people who are just like me, who CAN afford the weekly costs and maitenence, but cant afford to go out and spend thousands of dollars in one shot to buy / adopt a horse. BUT some one like me who may not already have horses, can save up to buy/adopt a nice horse ofcourse! My older mare came from camelot for $250, my younger mare came from a sour trainer $200, and my newest boy came off the track free! All sane , sound and wonderful horses. Not a thing wrong with any of them. Some people don't get so lucky. My new off the track boy is quiet as could be, you would NEVER ever know he had just come off when you get on him.
I'm not saying don't adopt. I don't support sale barns or any one else who trys to get horses cheap from auction just to re-"flip" them. I DO support rescues, because without them , all these horses would have no where to go at all, except to canada. I was just saying that prices' should be fair to the horse as well as the prospective adopter. Times' are tough and higher fee'd horses will sit as many have... I watch all the local websites and quite a few have the same horses that they have had for months - a year now. It's tough to find homes, I KNOW, but even tougher when the price is higher. Just because some one cant afford to pay $1500 for a rescue, doesnt mean they cannot provide a wonderful , loving, caring home.. I know a rescue who posts here ,wont say names, who IGNORES MANY of her emails to a certain few friends of mine who have sent her countless emails interested in her horses. You can't always hold your standards sky high.. It's not fair to the horses'. You shoulden't have to be rich to have a horse either.. God knows I'm not. And I now have three who are fat, happy and healthy !
Just saying! Everyone should go out and hug their horse(s) now =]. Im thankful for my three. They are GREAT !
Sorry for the long entry haha. Enjoy ! Keep this conversation sane !

Adoption Fees |
| |
|
There is no rule on how much a 501(c)3 can charge per horse.
We set our fees depending on what the horse can do. If a horse can w/t/c and take a course of jumps, is kid safe, and has perfect ground manners it's worth WAY over $1000.00 in my opinion. I've been doing this for a few years now and I find our prices are very fair. If you can't afford to pay an adoption fee it usually means you can't afford to pay board, vet, farrier. Most people spend over $1000.00 a month on their horse just on basic care (board, vet, farrier, treats!) Every penny that is made from adoption fee's goes to help other horses.
Any supporter of Project Sage knows how hard we work to make our horses as adoptable as possible. They are worked with on a daily basis. All of our horses have perfect ground manners when they leave us and tons of training. I have an AMAZING team that rides our horses (thanks guys!!!) and puts professional training under their belts. Yesterday we took in 3 OTTBS that needed a place to go. We already are working with them and helping them become more adoptable.
My main point is that just because the horse is from auction does NOT mean it has issues. Most of them are worth WAY over the adoption fee price.
Our horse "Hunter" was jumping today like he's been doing it for YEARS! He's a diamond in the rough. Anyone who has come to the farm compliments us on how gorgeous he is. He could be put in a horse show this weekend and would walk away with ribbons.
I encourage everyone to ADOPT! We have some amazing horses right now that would love a new home!
A HUGE thanks to Lynn who donated 12 brand new buckets today!!
Thank you to everyone that has donated buckets and tack over the past few days. It is a HUGE help!!

How a 501(c)3 works in regards to adoption fees |
| |
|
501(c)3 is just a tax status, it has no governing or policing policies over the rescue itself. It simply states that no profit can be made that will benefit anyone other then the non-profit organization. So whatever adoption fee a rescue chooses to put on a horse is fine with the IRS. Will the rescue be likely to get or keep donors or adopters if their adoption fees are outrgeous? No. Just because a horse winds up in a rescue does not mean there is anything wrong with it (though there usually is). We adopt out from Free - $1,500. We adopted out a pony this spring for $1,500 that had about 20 people fighting over her at that fee (probably because she was a $10,000+ pony). Generally we spend thousands on a horse before it is adopted, so no we don't profit at all from adoption fees. Average amount spent on our rescues from intake until the time is can be made available for adoption is $2,500, average adoption fee is $800.

Rescue fees |
| |
|
I was fortunate enough to be adopted by a Mustang from a rescue and I have to say that she is worth every penny. When I went to meet my rescue for the first time I have to say I was so impressed with the facility and the woman who runs/owns it. After being shown around and introduced to all the rescues I was more impressed than I could possibly say. The facility was immaculate, the horses were in such good shape, they were happy, healthy, and just from their personalities you could tell how well loved and cared for they all are. I adopted my Mustang and the fee paid was no where near what she is worth. Most of the horses in rescues either comes from the rescue saving them by purchasing them from an auction so they aren't sent to slaughter or pay to remove them from a bad situation. Not all horses in a rescue facility are just given up for free to the rescue but if they are for whatever reason you can be sure that they are in need of medical attention. Then there is the vet check cost, quarantine, farrier, shots, worming, feed and bedding that is just the start of the money the rescue lays out just taking in a horse. Then there is the daily care of keeping the horses, feeding and bedding, grooming, putting in the time to train them for their prospective adoptive homes. Then add in the overhead of the bills, utility fees, workers, buckets, blankets, fly spray, etc. If you own a horse you know what I am talking about, all the costs that go along with it, just because they are a rescue doesn't mean that those costs do not exist. When all this is done the fee that an adoptive home pays is mere pennies compared to what the rescue has spent on the horse. My Mustang Sunny is a great addition to our family, she and my gelding Dollar get along as if they have lived together their entire lives. She is well trained, happy and healthy and is registered with papers giving me the exact details of the herd she was born into and where she comes from. When people ask about her they cannot believe she was a rescue, they paid several thousand dollars for their horses and they aren't anywhere near as wonderful or trained as she is. I understand people want to save money and feel that if they are adopting a rescue that they should not pay a fee or it should be minimal. What you need to understand is that most rescues go above and beyond what most individual horse owners do. They have to raise funds and support from outside sources to help with the costs of saving the lives of these horses. My life has been blessed more than once with beautiful, loving horses. My phenomenal gelding Dollar came from a wonderful barn and even though they are not a rescue, they put as much love, work and care into their horses and that is what makes him worth his weight in gold, he is also registered. My beautiful Mustang mare Sunny came from a wonderful rescue and she is a delight, they have different personalities but they make my life complete and give me unconditional love that makes me feel honored that they picked me. I do not debate anyone on what they should or should not pay for a horse whether it be from a rescue or a sale barn. There are cheap horses out there and there are expensive horses out there, it is up to the individual to decide on what they want and what they intend to use the horse for. My only recommendation is that you visit the rescue or barn you intend to adopt/purchase your horse from, you have the horse ridden for you to show you how well the horse is trained and then you get on that horse and see if it is a good fit for both you and the horse. When you find the perfect horse, you know it and whether you are paying a couple of hundred dollars to a rescue or paying a couple of thousand to a sale barn, that is completely your choice and no one should ever tell you otherwise. I also believe that we should all be grateful for the rescues out there that save the lives of such perfect creatures, when you adopt a horse you make room for another horse to be saved. Dollar came from Lia Savas and Wayne Dougal of Indian Head Ranch, Huntington, NY (who I thank for such a great horse and for always being there over the years ) and Sunny came from Lisa Post of Helping Hearts Equine Rescue, Perrineville, NJ (who I am grateful to for all the hard work and dedication she puts into her rescues and for bringing Sunny into my & Dollars life ) I would recommend anyone looking for a horse and whatever your needs are to check them both out.

Muddy spot in paddock |
| |
|
We had 2 mud spots in the lower part of our field. We had crushed rock delivered and we wheel barowed it and spread it. However, you have to tamp it down by hand (unless you have a roller machine) and wet it and then retamp. We then put some clean dirt over it and it worked pretty well for many years. But -- tamping is hard work - LOL.
By the gate, after putting down some crushed rock I put 2 stall mats. Worked pretty well at the gate, however, you had to periodically pull mats together. I would have been better off buying a custom cut 4 x 8 ft. mat for that purpose instead of trying to use 2 stall mats.

Broadway and mud. |
| |
|
I eliminated the muddy spots on my property including inside the paddocks by filling the low spots with "recycled crushed concrete" You can find it at Mason and stone, or concrete yards.
Try to find the stuff that has gone through a "magnet" so you don't have any metal debris in it, Tell whoever you get it from that it MUST be CLEAN CRUSH because it will be used around horses,(a little more expensive though) Try to get the "finer" stuff, it packs better than the large piece crush, I used a hand tamper, and spritzed the area with water in between tamping it down, then on top of that I added a layer of sand, I tried just adding sand alone to the low spots but the rain just washed it away. I also keep my paddocks really clean, the leaves are the worst, they hold in moisture and can turn paddocks into black muck. You could also try "clean fill" (with not too much clay) my neighbor used it and it worked just as well.

Rescues making money - none that I know! |
| |
|
I am not a rescue but as a horse owner am aware of the costs associated with. Add cost of quarentine, shots, teeth, feet, feed, rehabilitation, and you easily surpass $800.00. Plus insurance, board, mortgage if you own. Don't begrudge the pennies some rescues MAY make as it will go to help the next horse. Most rescues I know are struggling, during these troubled economic times, to keep their heads above water. Send your favorite rescue a few dollars when you can afford to. Most do the work of angels.

adoption fees |
| |
|
To Giana M
We are not soley a horse rescue so I dont know if that matters to you, but our adoption fees are determined by several factors from vet bills to time and training invested in each animal, sometimes the amount of time an animal stays with us plays a part. As I said there a many things we factor into a fee. Unfortunately many rescues leave you in a hole so if the rare opportunity araises to rehome an animal with some degree of ease and fairly quickly charging a reasonable fee allows money can go to future rescues. A fee should be fair to both the organization, the perspective home and the animal. In this economy rescue groups need to be careful with cash flow, the animals deserve to have a value, and you have to not scare off perspective good homes. Its tough. We just did the Yaphank rescue of dogs, cats and horses. We took the majority or the dogs and the horses and did receive a great deal of help (donations) with regard to food and cleaning supplies. Even with our vets being very good to us we are still in the hole for thousands. Theres AC that has been running non stop in this heat, special feed and additives(the animals were starved so theyre stomachs are sensitive) dirt linens, the laundrymat loves us, gas for transports, hay and grain for horses (very little was donated) this is just to name a few of the expenses involved in thhis rescue and we are 6 weeks in. We couldnt possibly charge resonable adoption fees and recover what was put into this rescue BUT we dont expect to either. Its rough but then again anything worth doing in life isnt sapossed to be easy. I hope this helped even alittle. Good Luck

Mud puddle in paddock |
| |
|
I have a low spot in my small paddock that I made the mistake of trying to fill in with composted material from the back of my property last year. I now have a mud puddle whenever it rains that gets a green slime on it and takes days to dry out. I'm thinking I need to add sand? What kind? (who knew there were different types!) Should I do the whole paddock which still grows grass or can I just amend this particular area? Any info on how to go about this, where to purchase, etc. is greatly appreciated. Since I don't get on my home email often, posting your responses here would work best for me. Thanks folks!

Adoption fees. |
| |
|
Dosent the 501 not for profit have rules against how much you can ask for your rescues? NO offence, but anything over 1000 is a sale not an adoption fee.. Im just wondering because i remember some one saying that your not supposed to ask over $800 or something, i cant remember exsactly. Not looking to start any arguments im really just curious. I just find it strange to ask that much for a horse a rescue has not even had for 3 weeks. I know a lot of money goes into the resuces, usually more than you get back but thats the point of the not for profit.. Atleast thats how I see it. Many rescues spend countless dollars and adopt out free, or even under $1000. Then theres a couple putting crazy price tags on the rescues. Then the horses themselfs' do not benefit because it takes much MUCH longer to get them into a suitable home. Again, not looking for an argument, i'm looking to start a knowledgable conversation. Thanks !

It Should Read "Helmet Safety Video" |
| |
|
The message I wrote about the video on helmet safety had the word "helmet" left out of it....my mistake...so it should have read "video on helmet safety" not riding safety. Thanks, Denise (:

LIHS Western |
| |
|
Just wanted to thank all the riders who braved the heat today to come and support our LIHS Western Show. Huge thanks to Janice Kryl for donating her day to judge for us. Also to Laurie Wolney for donating her farm Annie Acres to us for the day. Karen Szczotka for announcing and keeping the show moving before we all melted in little puddles. And of course my fellow board members for all the hard work it takes to put together a show.

IHA General Meeting on Helmet Safety |
| |
|
July 10th was and is the day from now on put aside for National Safety Helmet Day. Islip Horseman's Assoc. is having a short video on riding safety. The meeting will be held at the Bohemia Equestrian Center on Ruzicka Way off Smithtown Ave. off Rte 454 ( Vets.Mem. Highway).
Not sure which I love more.....my helmet or my horse...hmmm...if it wasn't for my helmet, I wouldn't even alive and well to ride my equine partner in life if it wasn't for my helmet.
Thought for the day....you can always REDO your hair....you can't REDO YOUR BRAIN!
Denise :)

Re: Horse greetings |
| |
|
I do not use treats for my own personal horses - except for putting them into toys for them to mess around with, or in a bucket, rarely if ever by hand. When working with/training a young, scared, or abused horses - I will resort to to feeding them by hand temporarily. I do hay/grain my own horses myself sometimes, but maybe 1-2 times a week - if that. My horses greetings to me are definately not food motivated...
