L.I. EQUINE'S MESSAGE BOARD

Welcome to LI Equine's Message Board! This is the place to post your ideas, suggestions, stories, etc. All are invited to keep us up to date on what's going on at your barn in the "Barn News" section. The "Bargain Barn" is available for you to list for sale all items under $100 (any item over $100 is considered a classified ad and must be submitted as such!) Please remember that we do not post horses for sale, lease, or share board unless the horses are for free. We also don't post classified ads on the message board. And....please remember - if you don't have anything nice to say - don't say anything at all!

Need/Want to intern at a barn. Can anyone help?
I am an 18 yr old first year college student looking to intern at a barn to learn barn management, breeding, basic medical care, etc and daily upkeep of a barn. I am currently going to suffolk for liberal art because i was going to go upstate for equine studies but i've learned in the horse business that experience counts more than a degree. So if any one can help me or offer their time to intern me that would be wonderful. I don't know where to go or where to start so i thought i'd start here. I can do basic things like tack, groom, bath, feed, clean stalls, ride english, etc. I've been around horses for 11 yrs and i want to pursure my life with them. I'm not looking to clean stalls for the rest of my life because i've been doing it for 4 years. I want and need to learn more. If any one can help please email me at lacrosseht19@yahoo.com thank you

  FELINE FUNDRAISER 01/18/09
I am helping plan a "feline fundraiser" to be held at the Sound Beach Inn on January 18, 2009 from 12:00 - 4:00pm.

We are having a "Regift for Rescue" chinese auction. We are collecting unwanted holiday gifts to be chinese auctioned off at the event. There will also be gift certificates donated by local merchants to be auctioned off. The money is going to trap, test, and spay/neuter the feral cats in our area.

There will be a 5.00 cover charge at the door for adults and 1.00 for children. This includes a full buffet of food donated by local merchants, arts and crafts for the children, and attendance to the chinese auction and local merchant flea market. Bring a gift, get a ticket for the chinese auction.

Don't have a gift? just bring a bag of cat food or kitty litter to get tickets for the auction.

It's sure to be a fun family event. I would love to see everyone there!!!!

Anyone interested in donating a gift, please contact me at 631-428-7874 or e-mail me for pick up or a drop off location. No gift too small... we are making up nice gift baskets filled with the smaller gifts.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation, involvement and attendance.

Carol

  Free Horse
I read your post about your free horse, please get a contract, from an attorney. I am talking with experience from both sides of the fence.

I once leased a horse that I thought was from the owner, turns out, she was leasing the horse & I was paying for the lease. One day I come to the barn after quite of number of weeks bonding with the horse & he is gone. Turns out someone saw me out on trail, got in touch with the real owner & the horse was Gone...Back to the rightful owner, but I was heartbroken & the Fake owner took off with the money I paid, & I looked like a real dummy. She gave me a fake name for herself & the horse.

Safe Guards for Free Horse --
Your daughters 22 yo horse sounds like a lovely horse with a personality.

While there are many good people around, there are also some who are not. People have been known to "adopt" a horse and then use it for something other than the agreed upon purpose. Be VERY careful who you adopt your daughters "free" Holsteiner out to as therer are many less than honest people out there. Personally, I would have a legal contract drawn up by my attorney and have us all sign it and have it witnessed. Remember, if the person you give the horse to ever disposses of it without calling you -- it is a civil matter and the police will not involve themselves in it.

My cousins friend just recovered 2 of her horses: they needed to "cut down the herd" and she gave the 2 horses to a horse friend wo agreed to the restriction that if they were ever not wanted she would take them back immediately. To make a long story short -- she checked on them twice (don't forget she knew the person) and when she called about 6-8 weeks later to see how they where after much hemming and hawing the woman told her she sent them to a sale. It has taken her much, time and effort (and help from friends) to find the two horses and BUY them back. By the way -- both horse's were totally misrepresented when sold and 2 different families as beginner safe horses. They were about to go to sale to sales -- one family thought they bought beginner pony & got an advanced pony and the other family got an intermediate/advanced horse with an occasional buck for mother and child who were riding less than a year.

Your horse sounds like a wonderful fellow -- safeguard his future if at all possible.

  Items to Donate to Rescues
Hello everyone and happy new year! I have quite a few items that I would like to donate to a few rescues. I just finished up an internship with an equine pharmaceutical company and have TONS of leftover brand new care items such as some pricey wound care cream. I only have 2 horses and would never be able to use all of this stuff before the expiration date. None of these are prescription items, they are all sold in tack shops and online. If you are in the Manorville area, as far west as Patchogue or anywhere east of Manorville I will gladly drop them off. Please e-mail me for details at maria.favichia@gmail.com

  re: free horse
Just make sure you have the person who adopts your horse sign a contract stating that they will never sell the horse. It is VERY important and if your horse is as special and sweet as he sounds, you owe this to him. There are many well meaning people who adopt horses and then cannot keep them after a few years. MANY older horses wind up going to lesson barns which then send them to auctions which then sell them to slaughterhouses. If you need any help with the contract you can contact me. FLequestrian@aol.com GOOD LUCK!!

Good Home Needed for free Holsteiner
We have a 22 year old Holsteiner that needs a good home. He is a wonderful guy, can still walk, trot, canter...and maybe even jump 2'6. My daughter jumps much higher now and has a younger horse. He licks you like a dog when you put your hand out, picks your pocket for treats....and is a tall (16.3), handsome guy. He is located in Long Island and we want to find a loving home for him. I will provide blankets, Coggins, and new shoes and just want him to be loved like my daughter loves him.

  Make It a Valentines Pony
What K's Mom said was 100% correct on the pony. If she did deliver after 3 reminders, this is what could happen: These wackadoodles start "Missing My Baby" after a couple of weeks. First they will hint they miss the horse, and ask for a visit. If you say no, they get a little more emotional. Then they get more persistent. Their kids are crying. You politely tell them your kids now love the pony. Then, one night, you are not home, and you find your child's pet gone in the morning.

After the initial visit and one follow up, unless there is just cause, such as abuse allegations...Never let them come around. (This is for private adoptions - NOT verified rescues.) This does not go on with good rescues or a private adoption from a good reference.

As Judge Judy would say: "Get down on your knees and say, Thank You God".

I am sorry to hear about your pony issues. I cannot imagine the heartbreak. Nobody likes seeing thier babies get their hearts broken. I can tell you this however, think of this as a blessing! Since this person seems "unreliable" what if she did deliver and decided she wanted the pony back or something? If this woman is that wacky to do what she did to you...you never know. You are better off having no dealings with this type of person! This was just not the right pony and the right one will come soon!

Good luck.

  HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE.../resolution
    HAPPY NEW YEARS TO EVERYONE....

I'd like to start off by thanking Sharyn for the LIEquine. Yes sometimes it gets crazy and out of control on this message board but it also does good.

My resolution for this 2009 is to make some positive changes in my life and also try to help make more of a difference in our horse community.

RE.EXCEL EQUESTRIAN 2008: I'd like to start by thanking IHA for their donation to Excel Equestrian Riding Center for the physically & mentally challenged located in Medford. Also others who made donations in 2008 to Excel that made a big difference was ToniAnn of Mineri's tack shop at Parkview Stables who held a bake sale fund raiser where all proceeds went to Excel. Also, JoAnn & Gina for helping out. Tony for setting up and taking down the tables & cabana. And to ToniAnn, JoAnn, Gina, Jerry & Rita Trapani, Bernie & Nikki and everyone else who donated the extremely yummy baked goods and all who came out to buy them and help support such a great organization. Also like to thank Bernie, Steven & Nikki for there very generous hay donation. Lori with Gracie thank you for your donation of grain. Also Jason Lacertosa for his donation of ribbons and trophies. All the help Dowling College Equestrian team gave. What a great group of young people. And to all who either helped by sending in cash donations or who donated your time. IT IS TRULY APPRECIATED... And we are looking forward to a great 2009 where we are planning fund raisers, , swap night, possibly a auction and other events. We also would like to raise enough funding to update the facility or find a facility to move to with a indoor so the children & adults in this program can ride year round. Anyone who would like to make any kind of donation to Excel you can email me at revrob48@aol.com.

Wishing all the Outlaws a great 2009 show season.....

And last I'd like to thank all my true friends and wishing you & your families a great, healthy & safe 2009. You helped me get thru 2008.. Love you guys....... Robyn

  Pony for your Daughter
Hi Kelly -- I'm so sorry to hear about that happening to you. The horse world is such a wonderful place, but sometimes you run into those rotten apples. I do know of a person who is selling her
14-year-old, very fancy, 14 hand (he's a large, but takes care of his rider) pony. He has shown in all the big shows doing hunters (I know this isn't your concern right now, but he could be a pony

  So Sad...About Pony
I am so sorry to hear about what happened. I have a grown daughter who tragically lost her beloved seven month old sheltie puppy when she was eleven, (boarding ...gate left open..hit on NS Parkway) and I know what agony it is to see a child heartbroken. There are several rescues on the board who might have a pony, or know of one available soon. They may have adoption fees for the trouble of rescuing, boarding, vetting etc. You do get what you pay for...and the cost is usually very fair. However, good wee ponies are hard to find, and people keep a good pony forever because it is a solid foundation for a child to learn. Contact me at my email and I will ask around if anyone has one upstate near a friend of mine. I wish you luck.

  Pony for my heartbroken daughter
I am looking for a small to medium size pony 5-15yrs old, quiet, sound good for a beginner.
We heard about a free pony owned by a woman named Mary in Melville, I visited this pony the day after Thanksgiving, my husband and I decided to get it for our 3 1/2 year old daughter for Christmas. She loves horses and loves to ride, but, our 2 horses are to big for her to do anything on her own. We were so excited. The only thing this Mary wanted was to make sure the pony was going to a good home, so she wanted to come look at our setup, considering she had a run in shed and the stalls were a mess, I was confident that our center isle 3 stall barn, with all the extras built 8 years ago would be a great home, and our daughter would just love this pony like no other. On many occasions when she said she was going to come by, we waited all day for her, and she would never show, finally, its the day before Christmas Eve. We wanted to suprise our daughter on Christmas morning with the pony along with all the stuff that we bought for her, bridle, bit, pink saddle pads, pink wraps, new pink I Love my Pony halter and all new pink grooming equipment. Two days before Christmas Mary told us she would be here at 2:30, no show, then she said 6:30 no show, now we are calling her, shes not answering our calls, finally, Christmas eve morning I called from my restricted phone and she answers, she tells me that she is just too busy to come by (although she had since the day after Thanksgiving) and this just isn't going to work for her. So this heartless woman strung us along right up until Christmas eve for whatever sick pleasure she got out of this, taking away any other options we might have had. She knew the entire time we planned on giving this pony to our 3 year old daughter on Christmas morning.
So here we are, looking for another pony for a daughter, please, if anybody knows anyone who has a pony they want to go to good loving home please email us.

  For Dell's Mom
You would need for a 12x12 stall roughly 1.34 yards for every three inches of depth of crushed concrete or small gravel. The small gravel is gravel that had been crushed down to where pieces average no more than 3/8 of an inch. We did four stalls like that last spring. Also if you need to cut the mats, use a skill saw with super blade. Also get a couple of pallets to handg the area you want to cut over an edge the saw will not get as stressed if it's sucking up air from below and cut smoother.

Cement Stall Floors and other base floorings
The correct way (or the old fashioned way) to do a cement floor is to also have a drain installed in the center and have a extremely slight slope so that when you hose off/disinfect the cement the water goes down the drain.

This may be considered "old fashioned" -- but you do need to have drainage with a cement floor.

I still prefer the crushed rock -- which after being dampended and tamped becomes pretty hard. With mats on top (and caulking mats together) they stay level for years. And, when you pull the mats out for disinfecting and cleaning -- there is very little odor.

Another flooring that we tried in one stall was to level with crushed rock and then tightly lay pressure treated deck wood (it has to fit close and you have to use a sledge to get boards in tight) over the base and then lay the mats on that. This worked very well for an old horse who had leg problems due to very old age.

As always there are many varying and right ways to do something. It is what you decide is best for you and the horses.

Good luck -- all flooring is a good bit of work.

Hi Laura. I wanted to let you know that the guinea pig Diesel you gave us 3 or 4 years ago passed away New Year's Eve.   stall floors
I would never do cement floors in my stalls, just my opinion. My stalls have have a sand/clay/crushed bluestone base with mats on top. I have no problems with drainage or the mats shifting at all.

  Good Morning...
First a long over due Howdy and a prayer for you Rose!

Rita, thank you so much for the New Year post. Sent it out all over. What a powerful message!!

In regards to helmet cleaning, I learned here, I believe, that popping it on the top shelf of the dishwasher, with no soap, works great! No heat cycle, either. May take a day or 2 to dry so please keep that in mind, also!

I use heater rings in the barn. Can't deal with frozen buckets! Never had a problem. Reinspect them every year in the house to make sure they are ok and my horses leave them alone.

Now if everyone could just pray for an early spring...wink

  Stall Floors
I dug down 3 feet in my stalls and packed the dirt down, little RCA and put rubber matting. I have to re-do them, being the barn is at the slope of the property the water is pushing them back up again, so I'd definatley recommend cement since that's what I've heard works the best, and I'm going that route next summer.

  Stall Floors
I personally do not like cement with stall mats --- pee sometimes goes between mats and has no place to drain.

My stalls had crushed rock that was dampened and then tamped down. They were level and then stall mats were put over crushed rock -- I used caulk between the mats so they didn't separate.

I think if I had to do it again, I would pay someone to put down something called "stall skin" -- it sounds great on the web and the ad.

Many ways to do something -- just depends on what you like.

  Helmet Cleaning??
Does anyone know any alternative ways as far as cleaning a Charles Owen helmet?

I accidentally left mine in the shed and its a little dirty, and I was wondering if anyone knew how to clean them besides the deodorizer that I have.

They are currently dirt and I would like to know what is the easiest thing for me to do, Cement and rubber matts over OR put a crushed rock down and then rubber matts over? Anyone who has done this project themselves, please Post as i would love to hear all ideas! Thanks and Happy New Year!

  Happy New Year
    Happy New Year

I opened my mail this am to two great little items. Sharyn's LIequine Newsletter had Market News. Just how I see it, I think our Spring will bring new hope, then again I have been known to see my glass half full, when others see it half empty. Thanks Sharyn for sharing that with us. Thanks also for fixing Lil Biddy's picture, Cowgirl.

The second from one of the nicest young adults I have had the pleasure of watching grow into one of the hardest working, loving and caring horse women. Little CY thanks for sharing cowgirl. Her NY wish is on the religious side, so if this doesn't work for you, I apologize but its worth the read. So think of a new born foal and his hers first whinny into what will be their New Year and make it work. If you never witnessed a new born foal's first whinny your glass is half empty. Come visit us http://www.kentuckyoutlawacrequarterhorse.com/ and filly your glass. We have foals arriving in KY February and March and on into the Spring and if you have some experience with this visit us and lend my Vet tech a hand, and fill your glass.

PS Kentucky horse economy is very good, horse prices the same as last year. Shows, Shows, Shows all the time winter and summer. Racing world working with show world and even the trail people get IF money and money and prizes donated by breed clubs for points acquired at huge organized trail rides. This also works to preserve they trial areas. We could learn a lot from that state. All disciplines and the Race world work as a team in KY. I am just back from the KYQH seminar and banquet and they are doing awesome. Strange as it is we have about the same number of TB's, QH's,(along with other breeds) and Racehorse mix in NY and we have nothing working for us like the KYBIF program.

My wish for the New Year a huge combined horse show of all disciplines to benefit the Suffolk County ASPCA. Call it a Jamboree, with a country western band Friday night and NBHA Barrel Racing, NPBA Pole Bending and Team Penning Saturday Night. With English and Western USEF Classes and ECRA reining classes held in the Daytime. Sounds like Sussex and why not. Suffolk County Farm would be a good place to put this on. This would also show the general public the state and county just how huge we are. It would take some work, but I am sure one of our local clubs could pull this off. I saw that James Rice has a benefit show for S.C. ASPCA in May, that is a club that could organize a Sussex type show of this kind.

With that said Congrats to Nicole Murphy and her horse (for sale on LIequine). Diversifyjustnimprint USEF Horse of the Year National Grand Champion Jr Ex. Western Pleasure. I believe they did this at Sussex we should have these classes on LI as well. My barn alone could fill the class and we have many others with the same type of english/western horses on LI more than you think.

HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR !

I Am the New Year, I am the new year. I am an unspoiled page in your book of time.

I am your next chance at the art of living. I am your opportunity to practice what you have learned about life during the last twelve months.

All that you sought and didn't find is hidden in me, waiting for you to search it but with more determination.

All the good that you tried for and didn't achieve is mine to grant when you have fewer conflicting desires.

All that you dreamed but didn't dare to do, all that you hoped but did not will, all the faith that you claimed but did not have these slumber lightly, waiting to be awakened by the touch of a strong purpose.

I am your opportunity to renew your allegiance to Him who said, "Behold, I make all things new."

Hope your 2009 is truly blessed :-)

  Resolution
My resolution is to try to make a difference.
Think outside the bun regarding love of horses, and to keep enjoying and helping them - but while indulging in our equines, to also be aware of our fragile world, and hope for some stability.
Wishing the best of luck to our President Elect, (although I did not vote for him...just felt more secure with other choice...to be honest here)..., but realize that he has some full plate on his hands. It is nice to see young kids in the White House again.
To not make money the Almighty.
And to wear a bikini sometime, some way. Uh, yeah.
And, to Pay it Forward.

WHAT IS YOUR RESOLUTION THIS YEAR?
    Happy New Year to everyone!

What is eveyone doing tonight, and what are some of the resolutions for this year.

I am staying home and making a special dinner & movie for me and my hubby. I am going to make a really great mash for all of Jenny's horses and poinies tonight filled with apples and carrots.

I am not a late night person I go to bed early, I usually am sleeping when the ball drops.

My resolution is to eat less and spend as much time with my family that I am able and still work. Try to keep peace on the message board, AND MOST OF ALL NO NEW PETS.

Is anyone going to Times Sq ?

I have family plans for the following day! A fiesta at my house.

I hope you all drive safe and don't drink too much.

Safe and Happy New Year!

Thank you all for working with Long Island Horse Properties, and Long Island Homes. We would not still be here if not for all of the loyal customers on this board. I had a great year with all the wonderful horse people on this board. I made a few very nice new friends that came from this board this year.

Love and kisses to my Rose.

  heated buckets
We did the same thing with running the cord through a hole drilled in the wall. Works fine, so much less work, and the buckets last several years. Our 2 PMU geldings are into everything, but they don't bother the heated buckets. It would be hard for them to get to the cord anyway, and its wrapped in wire. Our 30 year old QH also has one, it really helps insure the oldsters drink enough water and don't get colicky in the cold weather.

  HEATED BUCKETS
    HEATED BUCKETS
I had the electrician install electrical outlets outside of the stalls...drilled a hole from the stall to the outlet to slide through the protected cord....the best...used these "regular" heated buckets for years without a problem. My horses drank as much in winter and in the summer...a minimum of two buckets over a 24 hour period. Nothing that the horse could get into since there was just a small drilled hole directly under the bucket through the wall...absolutely nothing exposed. I think the buckets were about $35 - 40...can't remember. I have them for such a long time and they still work!

  Get Well Wishes for Rose
I spoke to Rose's husband Gene this morning and Rose is still under the weather. She is overwhelmed by the number of direct e-mails she had on her computer when she last checked and decided to go back to bed for the winter. She is taking a well deserved break from the message board. Meanwhile, we don't want to give out her personal address but we do want to send her get well cards. So how about sending them to this office, LI Horse Properties, 19 West Main St., Smithtown, NY 11787. On the bottom of the envelope put, Attention:Rose. We'll bundle them up and send them to her.

Just in case she gets on and reads this... we love you, Rose. Get well soon!

  My Condolences, LS
Losing a beloved partner is never easy.

Tom is right about the pain being as much as your love for him.

We put our beloved Jack down 1 week before Christmas. It was what was best for him, and in the end, as much as we needed him in the beginning, it's at the end that it's the most important.

I've learned that he needed us more than we needed him. He needed us to make that call, and let him go with dignity and no suffering.

Would that it could be that way for all of them.

You did the right thing.

I too, know your pain.

It is OK to cry.

  The Unexplained
I am so sorry for your loss.

What is very strange, is People perk up too before they pass on. I know of so many people who were really at the end, no hope, and about 24 hours before, were jovial and looking like they were going to bounce back. I heard it's an endorphine thing, but really can't figure it out.
I guess it happens with animals too.
Anyone hear of this, or have an explanation?

12/29/2008   07:39:24 PM   [ K at aol.com ]

  LS...Sorry for your loss.
I can't do anything about the pain...it is, and has to be, as strong as your love for him is. But I can say that I know just how you feel. When something like this happens so unexpectedly, it can make it all the more difficult to accept.

It was three years ago this past Thanksgiving Eve that we lost Magic, and you're right, my life hasn't been the same. But time has taken away the sting, and what's left is all the good, funny, and touching memories.

I love the way you honored SPEC by saying that referring to yourself as his owner seemed belittling....that's exactly how I feel, thanks for putting such eloquent words to it. Partners...absolutely!

I had the same experience with Magic perking up just before she got worse, which almost made the right decision harder to come by. And her friends whinnied for her on her last walk, which chilled me to my bones then, and it still does just thinking about it now.

They say that euthenasia is removing your loved one's pain and taking it on yourself. I believe that is true and although I have felt that pain a few times, I am glad I could provide that final act of love and service to a trusted friend and partner, as I'm sure you are.

Sorry.

You're not alone.

  Miscellaneous stuff
Frank DiMarco trims mini's. Don't have his number offhand, but he does trim them.

Freezing buckets- i have the thermo buckets and they do work well. I now have the 16 gallon tubs that are heated, so i'm not using the thermo's. I refuse to put plug in buckets in the stalls. I have a huge fear of fire. The tubs are not located in the barn and i've done the best i could to insure the safety of the horses.
But the thermo buckets work great. They aren't cheap though, roughly $80 each. I have two here that i might consider selling if you are interested.

On a side note, does anyone have, or know anyone that has any creosote? I need around 5 gallons (but will take less if that's all that was available). I have 2 cribbers and a chewer, and this would solve all my problems in one shot.

  Goodbye my Friend and Partner
It's been exactly 24 hrs. since my beloved SPEC was put down. Words cannot describe how painful, sad, and unexpected this goodbye has been. This horse has been such an intense part of my life for the last 9 1/2 years and I can't believe he is gone. The void is intense to say the least and I know my life will never be the same again.

Most of all, to you SPEC, I want to thank you for all you have taught me about riding, loving, devotion, and trust. We had so many amazing rides and you always managed to give me a good scare now and then. What I would give to feel another spook from your invisible demons or to land off that perfect jump. You were the sweetest horse I have known. You were a very gentle and beautiful creature and I have truly been blessed to have had you as a such an important part of my life for so long. To say that I "owned" you is to belittle how much you have meant to me. We were partners and you will be missed terribly. I don't quite know what to do with myself right now and my thoughts always revert back to thinking about you. I feel so lost.

You were so brave and fought so hard. You perked up so much on Saturday that I thought you would make it. During your last walk you whinnied for your friends. It sounded strong and pure. I was always proud of you and how sweet and friendly you always were to all animals you encountered. Fairwell my friend and partner....I will always love you and will NEVER forget you. You are in my heart always!

A special thanks to Dr. Beroza for all his effort, patience, and candor. I would never think twice about entrusting another horses care to your very capable and professional hands.
